“I made the decision to work at Greenville Hospital System in 1984 because of the opportunity to work in a healthcare setting that had a dynamic cardiovascular program. I also felt that I would be able to grow and develop professionally in an organization that was a teaching hospital and that I would have more opportunity for leadership development.

“I came to work as a staff nurse in a part-time night-shift position in the Coronary Care Unit at Greenville Memorial     Hospital. Today, I have the responsibility for 75 FTEs in a critical care unit that includes RNs and unit secretaries. I also supervise the Rapid Response Team RNs and the Stat RNs.These RNs respond to acute situations within the hospital, ranging from acute myocardial infarctions coming in through the emergency room and cardiac catheterization laboratory to rapidly changing conditions on the inpatient floors.

“The culture is one of a constantly improving environment of patient care that strives to be patient-centered. In spite of the size of this organization, we are able to create a work environment that recognizes the contributions of its workforce. Our people appreciate the fact that their work is recognized, respected and rewarded.

“I believe that nursing provides a huge piece of the passion for excellence in the hospital system. Our contribution at the bedside, where we spend the most time with the patient, enables us to communicate our desire to be the best that we can be for our customers.

“You should choose a career at GHS because they encourage your success. And they appreciate your contribution and let you know it. I have felt valued here. I have felt appropriate recognition, have experienced educational opportunities, and have experienced leadership-development and growth opportunities.”
